The two phases competition was organized after a recent river flood that destroyed the existing concrete foot bridge (Passerella Squarciafichi), and devastated the lower town area. The main need was to select, in short time, a proposal for rebuilding the important pedestrian connection between the two river sides, and for restoring the compromised environment of the mouth river area, with a relatively limited budget. Our project idea was to look for a very “light” structure that, in addition of being stable, safe and durable, could also be beautiful and well-integrated in the old village “fragile” environment. In order to reduce the hydraulic risks and the environmental impact on the protected eco-system, the choice was to realize a single span bridge, 140 m long. The deck structure is suspended, and it has a slightly curved profile to minimized any possible conflict with the river flow, wile still allowing an easy accessibility for anyone. The main structure and the suspensions rods are partially in recycled steel, while the deck is in wood. Photovoltaic panels, integrated in the railing, provide renewable energy for the LED light fixtures power. The projest has been awarded as shortlisted projects at the Unbuilt 2024
